The world is so full of noise.
More communication and distraction than at any time in history.
24-hour news cycles designed to shock us.
Everyone with their own media platform in their pocket.
Everyone with access to us at any moment via the devices we live on.
It can be hard to remember that we, ourselves, exist among that noise, pulled as we are in so many directions.
The disembodying nature of so much of our technology can leave me feeling adrift.
And even before that… Many of us weren’t really taught how to want things. Or how to know what we want.
Or that wanting is ok.
And this can be a problem.
In the redfining of productivityin my Meaningful Productivity framework, one of the key distinctions is to take us away from the haphazard, mechanical traditional definitions of productivity: more outputs per input.
These definitions encourage busyness and action, but not necessarily productivity or impact.
And to point us towards something more. Something more human. Something purely human, in fact: meaning. To a definition like this: get more of what really matters done in this one, precious life you have.
But this begs the question: what really matters?
And most of us find that question hard to answer.
Part of the reason for this is: we don’t have the ways of listening that we need.
We’re used to listening to others, particularly to our devices. But as someone once said, if information was the problem, we’d all have perfect abs.
But we aren’t used to listening to ourselves.
And we aren’t used to listening beyond ourselves, to whatever we might hear there.
Part of what makes work with individuals and teams transformational is when they are able to listen to themselves. By telling someone else something, or hearing something else expressed, they see something new, hear themselves expressing something, notice the want they have underneath.
In two weeks, to complete my Meaningful Productivity Workshop Series, I’m hosting a small-group VIP deep dive, built around creating the space for people to truly listen to themselves… or maybe even beyond themselves (there are a few seats left if you’re curious).
As I paused with my coach last night, reflecting on the cracks in the road ahead in my business, on the choices I have that will influence how my future will unfold, I asked the question: how will I decide to guide my future?
And in her presence I realised the answer lies in creating more ways to listen to myself.
Writing.
Time in nature.
Reflection.
Prayer.
Journeys into the subconscious or the world of dreams.
In these things, it’s unclear to me who I hear. Is it me? Is it something more?
But if and when we can create space space from the noise, to hear the truth and see the signs, then sometimes we can uncover the patterns.
Sometimes we can get a sense of this moment where we are, where the past and future meet.
And we can guide the world a little more towards heaven and away from hell.
The noise distracts us from this.
We need silence. A pause. A still point in the turning world.
We need time on the high ground, looking down at the battlefield.
Time on the balcony, looking down at the beguiling chaos of the dancefloor.
We have the power to imbue this life with meaning.
To make the noise a barrier we heroically overcome.
But only if we listen, to ourselves and beyond.
